Edgefield Town Council

During regular session for July 2012 the Edgefield Town Council approved Antioch Baptist Church’s request to use the town soccer complex for a sports summer camp, Mentoring Brick Strong Group’s request to use the town gym July 21st for a youth rally and John Brown’s request to have a Meet the 11-12 Year Old Team event on the town square.

Local businessman Joel Jolly addressed the council in regard to the Heritage Festival. A concern, apparently voiced by an individual in regard to the contribution of funds from the festival to a local charity, the Give Heat Program of DSS, was discussed. Mr. Jolly described the process used to select the recipient charity and the manner in which it had been administered. He informed council that Dean Campbell had recommended Provide Heat. Councilman Jackson suggested using the funds to do something for all the people. Mr. Jolly indicated a desire to receive input from any citizen or town official and welcomed help from anyone wanting to provide support for the festival. Council did not recommend a specific charity at this time. Joel did indicate that his favorite event of the festival was the whole hog cooking competition. This stimulated a good deal of discussion from Council in regard to the uniqueness of The Heritage Festival’s notable Friday night event. People seem to really like whole hog cooking competition and Edgefield’s prizes for the best whole hog are considered exceptional according to a number of persons present at the meeting.

Council approved expenditure of up to one thousand five hundred dollars to engage a firm to handle bids and project supervision for the new town welcome sign. Councilman Yarborough reported 8 fire calls and 3 fire drills for June. Council also approved moving forward on a fountain for Slade Lake.

There being no further business Council adjourned.
