Charlotte McCutchen, M.D.

SAN DIEGO, CA – Charlotte Barnwell McCutchen, M.D., 67, passed away September 11, 2012, of complications from Guillain-Barre Syndrome. A private burial was held at sea. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, October 20, at 1 p.m., St. John’s Episcopal Church, Fallbrook, Calif.

Dr. McCutchen is survived by her sister, Lilla D.,McC. Richards of McLean, Va.

She was predeceased by her parents Emily S. Dunovant of Edgefield and James M. McCutchen of Columbia; sister, Emily McCutchen Murphy; grandparents Emily B. Strother Dunovant and William L. Dunovant, Jr. of Edgefield.

She attended University of Washington, D.C. (1962-63); University of South Carolina, BS in 1966; Medical University of Virginia, M.D. 1970; Resident in Neurology at the Medical University of South Carolina (70-72) and resident in neurology at Vanderbilt School of Medicine, (1972-74); fellowship at Univ. of Washington School of Medicine, 1974-77.

Among her many honors was National Institutes of Health Award of Merit “For outstanding contributions in coordinating research efforts as a member of the Congressionally mandated National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research.”

Dr. McCutchen taught at the University of Washington School of Medicine (1974-77); directed the EEG Lab and the Seizure Clinic, VA Medical Center, Seattle, Wash. She was assist. professor at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, 1977-84; assoc. prof. (1984-90) Georgetown University; 1990, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.  She became Program Director for NIH’s Neurology Sleep Medicine and Circadian Neuroscience Grant and Small Business Innovative Research Program.

In 2000 she retired to Fallbrook, Cal., where the celebration of her life will be held.

Dr. McCutchen was recognized and awarded for her academic and research accomplishments, and was also noted for her wit.
