School Speaks to Death of Student

It is with a great deal of sadness that the Edgefield County School District reports today the passing of one of its students. Tyler Morgan, a 10th grader at Strom Thurmond High School, passed away over the weekend. Tyler has been a student with the school district since his preschool days.

Counselors were available at Strom Thurmond High School for Tyler’s fellow students to provide assistance during this time. The Strom Thurmond Student Council also requested that the students wear the colors red and black in honor of Tyler since he was an avid Georgia Bulldog sports fan.

Superintendent Greg Anderson stated “It is hard to find words to say at a time like this. We consider each and every student in our district special to us and so this has been an especially sad day for the students, teachers and administrators.”

Anderson further stated “Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and we want them to know that we are available to assist them in any way that we can”.

Mercantile Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be this Wednesday, October 3, 2012 between the hours of 5–8 p.m. at Mercantile Funeral Home. The funeral will be the following day on Thursday, October 4 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Mercantile Funeral Home followed by graveside services at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Out of respect for the family, Anderson has requested that students and employees of the school district refrain from speculating upon the cause of death. After having conversations with Coroner Thurmond Burnett, Anderson suggested that people could use their time more wisely by offering condolences and prayers for the family. “Obviously, this is a very difficult time for Tyler’s parents and family and so we hope that anyone associated with the school district will open their hearts with love and compassion for them.”
