Edgefield County Women Attend State Conference
Betty Jackson, Julia Bledsoe, Jane Herlong and Jan Burch, were among a group of more than 100 women from across the state attending the 2012 South Carolina Farm Bureau Annual Women’s Leadership Conference at Pawleys Plantation in Georgetown County.

Participants kicked off the conference with a motivational workshop presented by former Miss South Carolina and Farm Bureau member, Jane Jenkins Herlong.  SCFB Agricultural Literacy Director, Vonne Knight, spotlighted the 2012 Ag Book of the Year, “How Did That Get In My Lunchbox?”, and shared hands-on activities that volunteers can conduct with children to help educate them on where their food comes from. In addition, conference attendees also had the opportunity to learn a little more about the local area with a cooking demonstration from Pawley’s Island Specialty Foods as well as hearing from two local farm women.  The conference concluded with a tour of Brookgreen Gardens and historic Georgetown.

Farm Bureau Women at county, state, and national levels coordinate agricultural education and promotional activities. Their work includes supporting important family and agricultural legislation, youth programs, educational activities, leadership development, and commodity promotions.

According to Director of Women’s Programs Faith Lawrimore, “SC Farm Bureau Women work hard to educate both students and consumers about South Carolina’s #1 industry – agribusiness. Their dedication, knowledge and interest in family farms contribute much to the organization, as they work for the future success of agriculture in our state.”

The SC Farm Bureau Federation is a non-profit membership organization formed to promote and preserve the work of family farmers and rural lifestyles across the state.  In exchange for their annual dues and financial support of education, promotion, and lobbying efforts on behalf of agriculture and family farmers, Farm Bureau members are entitled to discounts and access to a number of quality products and services.

Persons interested in supporting the efforts of local farm women can contact their county Farm Bureau for additional information or go online at www.scfb.org/
