Man Burning Tires Flees from Deputies

Deputies with the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office were responding to a disturbance call on Powell Place, Tuesday, Jan. 1, when they spotted extremely black smoke issuing forth from a residence on Sandy Hill Court.  According to a report filed with the ECSO, deputies responded to the fire’s location and found two black males burning tires.  Both men reportedly headed toward a house on the property when the deputies approached.

As the men were being advised that they could not burn tires and that the fire would have to be extinguished, a record’s check was performed on both of the men.  The record’s check revealed that one of the men, 53, of Augusta, Ga., was wanted in North Augusta for auto theft and in Florida on a probation violation.  Upon notification that he was being placed under arrest, he fled the scene.

During the ensuing chase, a tazer was deployed by a deputy when the fleeing man at one point “squared off” to engage deputies.  However, the tazer did not make contact with him and he was able to escape into a nearby wooded area.  He was ultimately captured and transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center without further incident.  The other man in this incident, of North Augusta, was issued a ticket for burning hazardous material.
