Ruby Sadella Callison

LAURENS, S.C. – Ruby Sadella Callison, of Laurens, SC, formerly of Lexington, SC, passed away Friday, January 18, 2013, at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community.  Ms. Callison was born on November 10, 1914, in Lexington, SC, the eldest child of Tolliver Cleveland Callison, Sr. and Margaret (Maggie) Reel Callison.

After graduating from Lexington High School and Winthrop College in the 1930’s, she taught for one year at Brookland Grammar School in West Columbia, SC.  Ms. Callison enjoyed a long career as a bookkeeper beginning with Looney Chevrolet in Lexington, the SC Employment Compensation Commission, and for more than 20 years with the General Board of the South Carolina Baptist Convention in Columbia.

Ms. Callison was a lifelong member of Lexington Baptist Church and in later years attended First Baptist Church of Laurens.

Ms. Callison is survived by a brother, Preston Harvey Callison, Sr. formerly of West Columbia, SC, now residing in Eugene, OR.  She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Callison Rawl (Lexington), and brothers Tolliver Cleveland Callison, Jr. (Gaffney), and Jack Reel Callison (Cayce).

Many nieces and nephews treasure the legacy of graciousness, intelligence, and generosity that “Aunt Ruby” has left them.  Her extensive travel and love of discovery helped open their eyes to the world.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, January 21, at 2 pm, at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home in Edgefield, SC; burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery in Edgefield.  Visitation will begin at 1 pm at the funeral home before the service.
