Fundraiser to Benefit Local Army National Guard Deployed Soldiers

soldier-benThe South Carolina Army National Guard Soldiers of the Edgefield Armory, the 122nd Battalion Engineers (HSC/FSC) are currently deployed in Afghanistan. Under Operation Enduring Freedom, the Soldiers pledge their “Sapper Honor, Sapper Steel” under the mission name of Task Force Warhorse. Their mission, at the invitation of the Government of Afghanistan is to provide theater combat engineer support to Afghan National Army (ANA) engineer development. They will also perform troop construction and theater route clearance, in order to secure stability, peace, and prosperity for the people of Afghanistan.  Their mission will encompass approximation one year.

One of the simple pleasures they look forward to during their deployment is the care packages sent from home. Family and friends, who are members of the Unit’s Family Readiness Group (FRG) work together with support from VFW Post 6740 to ensure every Soldier gets a care package from home. “There have been so many people reaching out and wanted to send some love and fun from home,” said Stephanie Maroney, the FRG Leader, “it should really start to feel like a piece of home (for the Soldiers) soon”. Items sent to date include letters, cards, games, movies, candy, snacks, health/hygiene items, and so much more.

With the outpouring of support for the Soldiers, the 122nd FRG, a not-for-profit 501c organization, is hoping to defer the cost of shipping for all the care packages. A “Soldier Benefit” will be held on Saturday, June 29th from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Edgefield Armory of the 122nd Engineers (225 Augusta Road in Edgefield) to help with these costs. This event is co-sponsored by the VFW Post 6740 and hosted by the 122nd FRG. A silent auction, themed basket raffle, and bake sale are a few of the things taking place at this event. Food and drinks will also be provided for a small fee. The community is invited to attend the event and show their support for our local Guardsmen and their families. POC for this event is Stephanie Maroney, (803) 404-7066 or Jamie Witmer (Powell), (803) 341-9580.
