Savannah River Basin Caucus, Ga., S.C. Governors to Hold ‘Summit’

ANDERSON, S.C. – Representatives from the Savannah River Basin Caucus and the governors of South Carolina and Georgia will meet Wednesday in their first “summit” meeting.

The Savannah River Basin Caucus is a group of legislators whose districts touch the Savannah River Basin from both Georgia and South Carolina General Assemblies.  Their commonality are the vitally important water issues up and down the Savannah River Basin that impact both states.

This summit meeting will be hosted by Georgia Governor Nathan Deal and Georgia Rep. Alan Powell.  They will be assisted by S.C. Rep. Don Bowen of Anderson and the South Carolina members of the Savannah River Basin Caucus.  The South Carolina General Assembly hosted the Georgia General Assembly members this past Spring at the South Carolina State House.  Governor Deal and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley have agreed to come to this historic occasion, and the two states’ Lieutenant Governors will also be in attendance.

Another highlight of the Summit will be the signing of the $1,000,000 Savannah River Comprehensive Study, which will be signed by Colonel Thomas J. Tickner.  Colonel Tickner will be introduced as the new Colonel of the Savannah District of the United States Army Corps of Engineers and will be introduced to all attendees.

The summit’s attendees hope to obtain a productive dialogue between both states’ General Assemblies and the new Colonel.  The directors of both the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resource will be present to participate in the signing of the agreement, as well as rangers that work in the basin.

We also plan to have local Chambers of Commerce, local county officials, and economic experts that any of the respective Senators and Representatives have invited to speak from their areas.

We need your help to make this a success and we want to make sure that everyone is extended an invitation to attend this first Joint State Savannah River Basin Caucus Summit.

The event will be held at the Big Oaks Recreation Center, 5625 Anderson Highway in Hartwell, Ga.

There will be a closed meeting of members of the Caucus from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M.  The Governors will be there at 11:00 A.M. at which time it will be open to all who would like to attend.
