Elizabeth “Lib” Smith Morgan

EDGEFIELD, S.C. – Mrs. Elizabeth “Lib” Smith Morgan, 86, of Edgefield, wife of the late Claude C. Morgan, passed away Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at Edgefield County Hospital.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, October 18, 2013 at 11 A.M. at Edgefield First Baptist Church with burial in Eastview Cemetery in Edgefield.

Mrs. Morgan was born on Wigfall Street and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hamp Smith. She was a member of Edgefield First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Adult Choir and a substitute Sunday School teacher and led the preschool choir for many years. As a young adult, she played organ for the Edgefield United Methodist Church and Edgefield First Baptist. In 1950, She played the organ when the Billy Graham Crusade came to Edgefield First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Morgan graduated from Edgefield High School and then Furman University in 1947 with a major in English and a minor in music. She was a dedicated English and French teacher for twenty five years at Edgefield High School, Johnston High School, Strom Thurmond High School, and Wardlaw Academy. She also taught chorus in the later years.

She served as a member of the Edgefield County Hospital Auxiliary, she was a leader on the We Care committee to save the hospital in the 1980’s, and she attended many county council meetings to voice her opinion. She stood up for what she believed to be right even when it was not popular. Many things she told the council the county needed came to fruition years later, such as the middle school and the high school in the Merriwether area.

Her favorite role was that of Mother.

Survivors include 1 Son- Dr. W. Hugh (Maryedith) Morgan, 1 Daughter- Lisa (John) Gorniak; 2 Grandchildren- Kate and Walt Morgan. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and a son Claude Glenn Morgan.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 5 to 7 P.M. at the funeral home.

The family would like to express heartfelt thanks for the wonderful care she received over the last years at the Edgefield County Hospital. The nurses and nursing assistants were an integral part of her extended family.
