A Message of Caution from the Edgefield Co. Probate Court

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:

It has come to the Court’s attention that a scam may be circulating under the guise that it is associated with the Probate Court. Apparently, someone is making telephone calls to those who have recently lost a family member. The caller represents themselves as being with the South Carolina Probate Court and requiring that the family member purchase some type of Green Dot Card/Money Pak to facilitate collecting a life insurance policy.

Please be aware that there is no such entity as the South Carolina Probate Court as South Carolina has a County Probate Court for each county in South Carolina. Furthermore, the County Probate Court does not solicit funds of any kind over the telephone.

Should you receive this type of telephone call, do not provide any personal information to the caller. You should immediately hang up and report the call to local law enforcement.

Thank you,

Robert E. Peeler
Probate Judge
Edgefield County
