Mary McGlothlin Burton

EDGEFIELD, S.C. – Mrs. Mary McGlothlin Burton, 63, of Edgefield, beloved wife of Major (Ret) Wayne T. Burton, Sr., joined her Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday January 18, 2014.

A Celebration of Mary’s life will be held at 11 A.M. Tuesday January 21, 2014 at Gilgal Baptist Church, Edgefield, S.C. with Rev. Jerry Garvin officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 to 11 A.M. before the service.

Mrs. Burton was born in Bristol, Virginia, and was the oldest daughter of the late Donald A. McGolthlin, Sr. and Mary Williams McGlothlin of Grundy, Virginia. She attended the College of William and Mary and received a Bachelors Degree in Education from the University of Virginia at Wise. She also earned a Masters Degree in Psychology from Northern Colorado University. Prior to succumbing to Frontal Temporal Dementia, she taught sixth grade math and science at JET Middle School, Edgefield School District and at Southside Middle School, Greenwood District 50. She had also been a Guidance Counselor in the Buchanan County School District, Grundy Va.; Public Affairs Director for Buchanan County Hospital; and Director of Equal Employment Opportunity, Department of the Army, in Heilbronn, Germany.

In addition to her husband, Survivors include a son- Joseph J. LaPerla, Falls Church, VA; a Daughter- Mary L. LaPerla, Baltimore, MD; a stepson- Wayne T. (Meredith) Burton, Jr., Fayetteville, NC; step-daughter-Laotha L. Burton, Columbia, S.C.; 2 Brothers- Donald A. (Tracy) McGlothlin, Jr., Lebanon, VA; Kevin T. (Karen) McGlothlin, Honaker, VA; 1 Sister- Leah A. McGlothlin, Oakwood, VA.; a sister and brother-in-law- Ruth and Kevin Case, Mays Lick, KY; brother-in-law John Martin, Edgefield, SC; 2 nephews, a niece, and a grandson; special friends and care givers Ms. Maggie Quarles and Ms. Claudine Rhynes.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Association for Frontal Temporal Dementia, Radnor Station Bldg. # 2, Suite 320, 290 King of Prussia Road, Radnor Pennsylvania, 19087 or the Alzeheimer Association, 4124 Clemson Road, Suite L., Anderson, S.C. 29621, or to charity of one’s choice.
