Fox Creek Science Fair

Fox Creek Science Fair

Fox Creek held its annual science fair at the end of January. Students worked individually or in pairs and had to have their topics approved by their science teachers.  They began by making a hypothesis and worked through the scientific method, compiling their results on a science fair board.

Projects were categorized by subject, including Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. Members of the North Augusta Optimist Club judged the competition. The judges ruled on specific categories, such as a well-researched problem, a clearly stated hypothesis, well-organized data, and an organized visual display.

The winners for the Biology category are as follows: first place, Catherine Powell; second place, Johnny Carroll, Ian Hill, Jerod Tew and Devin Ferrell; third place, Hampton Ratcliffe, Peyton Hanks, Morgan Powell and Kayla Sanders; honorable mention, Ashton Williams, Ashley Roberts, Ben Langdale and Austin Harper, and Jacob Hodges and John Niechniedowicz. First place winner, Catherine Powell, tested carotenoids, or pigments, in certain plants flowers versus their leaves. Catherine stated, “I tested all red flowers. I found similarities in alstroemerias but no similarities in carnations and roses.”

For the Chemistry category, the winners are as follows: first place, Kameron Stampley; second place, Katie Pfennig and Olivia Floyd; third place, Melissa Cobb, Rachel Davis; honorable mention, Autumn Edwins and Britton Campbell. Third place winner Rachel Davis tested the effect of salts on melting ice. Rachel said, “I found that the canning and pickling salt worked best in melting ice.” For the Physics category, the winners are as follows: first place, Hannah Elser; second place, Cassie Simpson and Hannah Cain; third place, Morgan Goff, Jarius Byrd and Cory Lucas; honorable mention, Blaire Effler.
