Catherine Denny Johnson

WARD, S.C., – Memorial Funeral Services for Mrs. Catherine Denny Johnson, age 94, will be held Sunday, March 16, 2014 at 3 pm at Johnston Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Mrs. Johnson died March 7, 2014. She was a daughter of the late Lonnie G. and Marcella McGee Denny. She graduated from Ward High School in 1936 and went on to Columbia Hospital Nursing School where she graduated and became a registered nurse in 1941. For a number of years she was employed in the office of Dr. Charles G. Spivey and later worked as a private duty and public health nurse. In 1979, she retired to Ward where she took a special interest in beautifying the town. She loved gardening and designed flower beds, planted and cared for them. The town honored her in several ways through the years including having her as Grand Marshal during one of the many parades they have each year. There is a small garden dedicated to Mrs. Johnson by the railroad tracks with a sign which reads “Catherine D. Johnson—Flower Garden”.

Survivors include nieces: Pam (Joel) Long and Brenda Clark; nephews: Denny (Bridget) Clark and Donnie Denny; step-daughters: Terry (Danny) Stokes and Mary Ann (Bob) Roussin; several great nieces and nephews and ten step-grand children and great grand children. She was predeceased by her husband O. B. Johnson; sisters: Winnie Mae Clark, Marjorie Clark and Annie Ruth Scott; brother: L. G. Denny, Jr.; and nieces: Teresa Scott and Patty Miller.
