The Pickens-Salley Symposium on Southern Women

The Pickens-Salley Symposium on Southern Women
AIKEN, S.C. – The Pickens-Salley Symposium on Southern Women will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the Etherredge Center at the University of South Carolina Aiken.
This event was created to honor the contributions of Southern women and is named after the women who lived in the Pickens-Salley House on the USC Aiken campus. The two women, Lucy Holcombe Pickens and Eulalie Salley, each had unique qualities that made this house historically significant.
The featured guest at the Symposium will be Dr. Kari Frederickson, author of “Cold Water Dixie: Militarization and Modernization in the American South.”  Frederickson is an associate professor and chair of the Department of the History at the University of Alabama. She received her Ph.D. from Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Frederickson will discuss the impact of the Savannah River Site developments on women’s lives in this area. Her book explores the parallel militarization and modernization of the Cold War-era south.
The Symposium is open to the public at no charge and is co-sponsored by the American Association of University Women. For more information concerning the Pickens-Salley Symposium, contact Dr. Deidre Martin at 803-541-3448 or deidrem@usca.edu.
