Traffic Stops Results in Drugs Being Found on Suspect’s ‘Person’

A trooper with the SC Highway Patrol brought a driver in for booking at the Edgefield County Detention Center, Monday, August 11, after it was determined through a traffic stop that the man was driving under suspension. According to an incident report, during the stop, the trooper reported smelling a heavy odor of marijuana coming from the man, but a pat down of the suspect yielded no results. After observing the man reaching into his pants while in a holding cell at the detention center, a strip search was conducted on the suspect. He was reported to be uncooperative during the search, but even so, what appeared to be a clear plastic bag was observed to be between the suspect’s legs. After allowing the man to redress, the suspect admitted to law enforcement officers that he did have drugs on his person. The suspect then reached into his shorts and handed the officers 22 individually wrapped bags of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana. The bags were collected as evidence, and the man was charged with possession with intent to distribute.

Report of Missing Person Yields Recovery of Stolen Property

The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a possible missing person, Monday, August 11. According to an ECSO report, a father contacted law enforcement after his 31 year old son did not return from a kayak trip to Stevens Creek on Sunday, August 10. An ECSO investigator as well as officers from the SC Department of Natural Resources responded to the call and located the vehicle the son had driven at a landing off Chota Drive. Upon running the license tag to the vehicle, it was determined that the tag had been reported stolen and was listed on NCIC. The vin number to the vehicle was then processed, and it showed the vehicle to be registered to the son. The license tag was collected from the vehicle.

As to the missing son, he was located on the Savannah River by SCDNR. As he was being transported by boat by DNR back to the landing, the man attempted to jump from the boat into the water in an apparent effort to escape. The man became combative after his flee attempt was thwarted and had to be handcuffed and secured in the boat. The man was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of stolen goods and a hold was placed on him for other charges SCDNR will be pursuing.
