Henry Irvin Quarles

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Henry Irvin Quarles, 82, resident of 1352 Calhoun Road, husband of Doris Shrine Quarles, died Monday, August 11, 2014 at Self Regional Medical Center.

Born in Edgefield County, April 10, 1932, he was a son of the late Hugh Alonzo and Lillie Harris Quarles. He attended Edgefield County Schools and received a degree in heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration from Piedmont Technical College. He served in the South Carolina National Guard.  Henry retired as the service manager of Benjamin’s Heating and Cooling after 38 years of service. He was a former instructor in HVAC at Piedmont Technical College. He was an extremely avid gardener and he had a passion for sharing his harvest with family, friends and neighbors.

A longtime member of South Main Street Baptist Church, Henry was also a member of the Richard Carter Sunday School Class, Prime Timers, an usher and he formerly served on the grounds committee of the church. He was member of the Nice & Easy Exercise Group, the Greenwood Dance Club, and a former member of the Mathews Masonic Lodge #357. He was also a member of the Silver Haired Legislator Group where he served as Caucus Chairman for Greenwood, Laurens, Abbeville, Edgefield and Saluda Counties. He also served on the State Board of Directors of the Caucus.

Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a daughter, Sherri Angela Quarles Cottle of Lexington and her fiancé Ashley Houser, of Columbia; a son, Richard Henry Quarles and wife René Rolanda Pizarro of Atlanta; two sisters, Ruth Wates and Hazel Thomas, both of Edgefield and a brother, Luke Quarles of Johnston; three grandchildren, Chandler Austin Cottle, Hunter Tristan Quarles and Rockford Hugh Quarles.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3PM Wednesday at South Main Street Baptist Church with Rev. Andy Roberson officiating. Burial will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Chandler Austin Cottle, Hunter Tristan Quarles, Rockford Hugh Quarles, Larry Brock, Jeffrey Thomas, Randy Wates, Carroll Wates and Jimmy Moore.

The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 2PM Wednesday. The family is at the home on Calhoun Road and will receive friends in the Connecting Place at the church from 1:45 until 2:45 on Wednesday afternoon.
