Russell Johnston

TRENTON, S.C. – Mr. Russell Johnson, devoted husband of Shirley Hawkins Johnson for 36 years, passed away as a result of his motorcycle accident on the morning of July 3, 2014, when God s Angels carried him to his new Heavenly Home. Funeral services will be held 2 P.M. Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at Old Macedonia Baptist Church, 200 Macedonia Road, North Augusta, S.C. Burial will be at Mt. Canaan Baptist Church, 2451 Edgefield Road, Trenton, S.C.

Russell was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Columbia, SC for 30 years where he served in many positions. After relocating to Trenton, S.C., he reunited with his home church, Mt. Canaan Baptist Church, where he served as an Usher, a member of the Male Chorus, as well as a Community Worker. An untold number of people have benefited from his wisdom, guidance, leadership and compassion. Russell was known as an avid golfer, a restorer of classic Volkswagens and a basketball coach. He also loved the camping world and traveling the roads on his Goldwing. Russell held several positions as a member of Couples Unlimited Social Group in Columbia, S.C. for over 25 years as well as the Reunion Treasurer of the Strom Thurmond High School Reunion Committee. Russell is described as a Christian professional. “Always busy, but never too busy to listen” were the words of a co-worker at Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina.

Russell Johnson is survived by his wife, Shirley Johnson; his loving daughters, Shirae Johnson of Wake Forest, N.C. and Shirolyn Johnson (Steven Fredette, future son-in-law) of Lexington, S. C.; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Johnson of Trenton, S.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Juliette (James) Greene of Columbia and Ms. Sandra Johnson of Trenton, S.C.; two children by love of choice, Keith Everett Brown and Keith Anthony Brown of West Columbia, S.C.; one grandson, Kameron LeMel Simon of Wake Forest, N.C.; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Minnie Hawkins of Augusta, Ga.; eight godchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and loving family and friends.
