Johnston Man Killed in Aiken County Crash

A Johnston man was killed in a single car accident on Coleman Bridge Road near Ott Dale Drive in Aiken County around 2 a.m. Saturday, May, 25.  According to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton, Ricky Marquez Hammonds, 19, of Johnston, was killed when the late model Toyota Camry he was riding in left the road and struck several trees.

Hammonds was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.  He was pronounced dead at the scene from severe head injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, Calvin Edwards, 40, of Aiken, and another passenger in the vehicle, both of whom were wearing seatbelts, were transported to Georgia Regents University Medical Center for treatment of non life threatening injuries.

According to Coroner Carlton, Edwards was unsure of what caused the accident but believed it could have been the result of a blown tire.  However, Coroner Carlton did say that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the accident.  The SC Highway Patrol, and the Aiken County Coroner’s Office, are investigating this accident.
