Former NAPS Officer Sentenced in Satterwhite Shooting

CountyCourtHouseFormer North Augusta Public Safety Officer, Justin Craven, was sentenced Monday, April 11, at the Edgefield County Court House to 1 year in prison which was suspended to 3 years probation for misconduct in office related to the Feb. 2104 shooting death of Ernest Satterwhite.
Satterwhite was chased into Edgefield County on February 9, 2014, by Craven after the officer attempted to stop Satterwhite near the Wal-Mart in North Augusta. Satterwhite, however, fled from the officer and, according to a report filed on the incident, hit at least two other vehicles in his attempt to escape law enforcement. Satterwhite continued to flee until stopping at a residence in Edgefield County. Satterwhite was shot by Craven, who was approaching the driver’s side of the stopped vehicle, after Craven said Satterwhite tried to grab the officer’s gun. Satterwhite was transported to an area hospital where he later died.
