James Hammond Tillman, Subject of OEDGS Lecture by Bettis Rainsford

TILLMAN-JAMES-HAMMOND-LT-GOVThe public is cordially invited to the Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society meeting on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at 3:00 p. m. in the Lynch Building Annex of the Tompkins Library, Edgefield, SC.

Mr. Bettis C. Rainsford, the historian of the Edgefield County Historical Society, will address the life and times of James Hammond “Jim” Tillman (1868-1911).

He will put Mr. Tillman into the context of Edgefield’s famous Tillman family and then discuss Tillman’s early life and education, his years at Georgetown University, his early career as a journalist, his service in the Spanish-American War, his political career, the 1902 gubernatorial race, the Tillman-Gonzales affair and subsequent trial, his fight with tuberculosis and his travels to the west, his role as a member of the Presbyterian Church and his death and burial.

Special attention will be given to his wife, Mamie Norris Tillman (1875-1962), and to her long and valuable contributions to her beloved Edgefield.
