NEW YORK – Emma Jane Mathis Hayes died February 29, 2012. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 6, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, New York, N.Y. with Rev. Dr. Charles A. Curtis officiating.
She was born June 30, 1939 to the late Deacon Marshall and Naomi Mathis in Saluda. She graduated from Edgefield County School in 1957. Shortly, thereafter, she migrated to New York City where she married Clifford Elus Hayes and to this union were born four children, Carolyn, Barbara, Gwendolyn and Kevin.
She worked in the New York City Public School for over 25 years where she taught mentally challenged children. Mrs. Hayes took teaching courses at New York City College and attended Manhattan Bible Institute where she completed several Bible courses.
Mrs. Hayes was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughters Barbara and Gwendolyn, brother Marshall Mathis, Jr.; daughter-in-law Jacqueline Hayes, five brothers-in-law(Earl, Earl, Fellie, Malcolm and Robert). She leaves to mourn her daughter Carolyn (Darryl) Gulston and son Kevin Hayes both of New York; son-in-law Richard Cruz; six sisters Catherine (Esau) Butler and Geraldine Mathis both of Edgefield, Cora Timothy of Harrisburg, Pa., Delores Mathis of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mary(William) Little of Charlotte, N.C., Nancy Lowery of Houston, Tex. and, one brother Rev. Brodie Mathis of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters-in-law Johnnie and Willow Dean. Emma cherished her time with her grandchildren, Robbie, India, SeRina,Lamar, Danielle, Jasmine, Jalisa and Kevin Jr. along with her stepchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
